I began my journalistic career at the age of 13 by submitting stories to the local newspaper, later working for my high school and college newspapers, radio stations, online publications, and campus TV news programs.
After earning an associate degree in journalism from Rose State College, I attended Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma, earning a bachelor's in journalism and mass communication, with a minor in sociology, and later a master's in journalism and mass communication.
While attending undergraduate school at the University of Oklahoma, I was a staff writer at The Sun newspaper in Midwest City. I worked for The Sun for nearly four years as one of three staff members. The Sun also published EOC News (both twice weekly), as well as special publications. This provided me with a rich newsroom experience where I was able to contribute to everything from editorial content (news, sports, and feature articles, obituaries, photos, and Web content) to desktop publishing to customer relations. Delivering newspapers to our readers was a personal favorite of mine as I enjoyed hearing feedback from our subscribers.
After graduating with my master's degree, I served as Public Relations Director and Communications Specialist, as well as the sole technical writer for Darwin Global, NexPort Solutions, a software company focusing on an LMS and virtual meeting software suite. As a start-up, this experience allowed me to develop software documentation from the ground up. It showed me how clarity is key in all forms of communication. This led me to discover my love as an educator.
A few months after working at Darwin Global, I began my teaching endeavor by instructing media and English composition courses at the University of Phoenix, Oklahoma City part-time. I went on to become Communications Lead Faculty Chair for the state of Oklahoma campuses, which included both Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
After five years at Darwin Global and teaching part-time, I was asked to adjunct at my alma mater. This led to me accepting the role of Mass Communication Program Coordinator and Student Publications Advisor at Rose State College.
The 15th Street News has been in publication since the school's inception in the early 1970s. We launched The 6420 in Spring 2018. It is the first student-produced magazine at the school. The students at Rose State are innovative, tenacious, and responsible journalists.
Personally, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, reading, writing, listening to jazz, and eating my husband's cooking.
